Flathead Rivers Alliance is hiring a seasonal Conservation River Fellow to support visitor education and front-country stewardship along the Flathead Wild & Scenic River corridor on the Hungry Horse–Glacier View Ranger District.

This public-facing role focuses on river safety, responsible recreation, and partnership coordination.

  • The Hungry Horse–Glacier View District includes accessible and highly visited stretches of the North Fork (Border to Middle Fork confluence), Middle Fork (Bear Creek to South Fork confluence), and lower South Fork (below Hungry Horse Reservoir). Proximity to surrounding communities and road access creates concentrated recreation pressure.

    As visitation continues to grow, agency capacity has not kept pace. This Conservation River Fellow will provide a visible, consistent stewardship presence to reduce resource impacts and improve visitor understanding of river safety and responsible recreation.

    This is a public-facing role that emphasizes communication, professionalism, and partnership collaboration. Fellow will work frequently alongside Flathead Rivers Alliance volunteers at river access sites and boost water quality and other citizen science monitoring volunteers as needed.

    • Conduct outreach and education at river access sites along the North Fork (Border to Middle Fork confluence), Middle Fork (Bear Creek to South Fork Confluence), and lower South Fork (below Hungry Horse Reservoir)

    • Engage recreationists in conversations about river safety, stewardship, wildlife awareness, and regulations

    • Support river access site assessments and light stewardship improvement projects

    • Collect visitor use observations and report stewardship needs to FRA and agency partners

    • Assist with volunteer coordination and community engagement events

    In addition to district-based work, the Fellow may help support Flathead Rivers Alliance education and outreach efforts throughout the Flathead Valley as needed.

  • The Fellow will be supervised directly by Flathead Rivers Alliance staff and receive mentorship in conservation program delivery and nonprofit leadership.

    Opportunities may include:

    • Training in nonprofit conservation leadership, program implementation, and stewardship metrics tracking

    • Experience with grant reporting and partnership coordination

    • Applied learning related to Wild & Scenic River corridor management priorities

    • First Aid/CPR and other relevant safety or defensive driving trainings (as appropriate)

    • Professional engagement with federal and state partners, expanding understanding of conservation career pathways. Opportunities to join resource specialists with Glacier National Park, Flathead National Forest, Montana FWP and other partners on river patrols, fisheries work, etc.

    The Fellow remains an FRA team member while benefiting from collaborative exposure to agency partners and resource specialists.

  • We are seeking someone who is:

    • Outgoing and comfortable initiating conversations with the public

    • Professional and confident representing FRA alongside agency partners

    • Adaptable and self-directed in a dynamic field environment

    • Interested in river conservation and visitor use management

    • Skilled at balancing education with diplomacy when discussing regulations or stewardship concerns

    • Reliable, organized, and a strong communicator

    • Comfortable driving on various road surfaces (paved and dirt) in personal vehicle. Work will often be out of cell phone range. *An InReach is provided for emergency communication as needed.

    Because this is a front-country position, strong interpersonal skills and professionalism are especially important.

  • Housing for this position is supported by the Hungry Horse–Glacier View District.

    • The District has committed to covering either a bunkhouse housing space (if available) or providing a housing stipend equal to the value of that housing.

    • Bunkhouse availability depends on seasonal capacity and cannot be guaranteed at the time of application.

    • If space is unavailable, the District will provide a stipend equivalent to what would have been paid for housing.

    Rental housing in the Flathead Valley can be competitive, and the stipend may not fully cover market-rate rent in all cases. Final housing details will be confirmed prior to placement to ensure clear expectations.

  • This position strengthens front-country stewardship along some of the most visited segments of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River corridor. The Fellow will gain meaningful experience in nonprofit conservation leadership while helping protect river resources and improve visitor experience.

Flathead Rivers Alliance is hiring a seasonal Conservation River Fellow to support remote river corridor stewardship on the Spotted Bear Ranger District of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River system.

This field-based position focuses on visitor education, resource protection through education and outreach, and data collection.

  • The Spotted Bear Ranger District encompasses remote and heavily visited headwaters of the Flathead River system. Increased recreation and limited agency capacity have created growing education/outreach and stewardship needs.

    The Fellow will serve as a field-based stewardship presence focused on resource protection, public engagement. This position will frequently work alongside Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation’s River Intern along river corridor boosting education/outreach, data collection, and conducting stewardship work (address weeds, campsites, etc as needed). There will be opportunities to join Flathead Rivers Alliance staff and Flathead National Forest River Rangers on river, as available.

    This role includes extended time outdoors in remote settings.

    • Serve as river corridor liaison/ambassador - this includes being staged out of various ranger stations across the Spotted Bear Ranger District and hiking along river corridor.

    • This position will frequently work alongside Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation’s River Intern

    • Provide Leave No Trace, river safety, fisheries and bear-aware education

    • Support implementation of Comprehensive River Management Plan priorities

    • Assist with weed pulls and other improvements along the river corridor as needed.

    • Assist in volunteer stewardship days

    • Collect visitor use and stewardship data. There may be opportunities to collect fisheries and other resource monitoring data.

    • Support FRA outreach events as needed

  • The Fellow will receive mentorship and training in:

    • Wild & Scenic River management

    • Interagency collaboration

    • Volunteer engagement and public facilitation

    • Nonprofit operations and stewardship metrics tracking

    • First Aid/CPR, river safety awareness, and bear safety training (as appropriate)

    • Professional engagement with federal and state partners, expanding understanding of conservation career pathways. Opportunities to join resource specialists with Flathead National Forest, Montana FWP, and other partners on river patrols, fisheries work, etc.

  • Seasonal housing is available at the Spotted Bear District.

    • Due to remoteness of work position will be housed in Flathead National Forest Spotted Bear Ranger District bunkhouse along with other Spotted Bear based interns, employees, or volunteers.

    • Bed will be assigned to position for the duration of their internship.

    • Depending workflow position may be asked to camp periodically.

  • Protecting the remote headwaters of the Flathead River system requires a strong stewardship presence. A River Fellow with Flathead Rivers Alliance helps educate visitors, support the Flathead National Forest, Montana FWP, and other resource partners to ensure these Wild & Scenic rivers remain protected for future generations.

Volunteer Board of Directors Openings:

Title: Board Member at Large for the Flathead Rivers Alliance (FRA)
Term:
Two or three-year board term with the option of renewal for three consecutive terms.

Title: High Student Board Member at Large for the Flathead Rivers Alliance (FRA)
Term: One Year

Position Summary:
Flathead Rivers Alliance Board of Directors is the governing body, overseeing vision, mission, and internal operations of the organization. Flathead Rivers Alliance Board members are elected to serve a staggered term of either two and three years; and shall serve until his/her successor is elected. Board members hold overall fiscal and managerial oversight responsibility for Flathead Rivers Alliance. They are charged with the supervision and oversight of Flathead Rivers Alliance mission. They are responsible for making decisions, delegating work, and assuring decisions are carried out in the manner intended. Ultimately, board members serve as ambassadors for Flathead Rivers Alliance mission, inside and outside of organizational commitments.

About the Flathead Rivers Alliance
Formed in 2019, the Flathead Rivers Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Flathead River System. As the only friends group for the two administrative agencies for the river system, it is our goal to extend the agencies capacity to administer the Comprehensive River Management Plan for the nationally designated Wild & Scenic River and uphold the remarkable and outstanding values of the river system. Through education, stewardship and outreach we empower active community and stakeholders, we work alongside our partners to maintain the health of the Flathead River watersheds and mitigate human impacts, as well as to ensure access and enjoyment for all users. The Spotted Bear Ranger District, Hungry Horse Ranger District, Glacier View Ranger District within the Flathead National Forest, Glacier National Park and British Columbia-SE Kootenay are home of the three forks of the Flathead River. FRA works on the traditional homelands of the the Séliš, Ql̓ispé and Ktunaxa the longest-serving stewards of the river system. The river system has been traditionally frequented by Amskapi Piikani.

Each summer, Flathead Rivers Alliance hosts 300+ volunteers of all ages equating 1,700+ volunteer hours annually across a range of programs including, River Ambassador, River Recreation/Citizen Scientist, water quality monitoring, river invasive weed pulls, river cleanups, and river access improvement projects. Our work includes a multitude of year-round dynamic programs, events and projects. We believe in getting our hands wet, working alongside our partners and instilling stewardship into everyone we meet with a lead-by-example – we’ll-jump-first mindset. Through education and outreach we seek to provide the tools and access to knowledge that fosters an environment of self-teaching and pride in the river.
