Pulling Together for the Middle Fork!
Flathead Rivers Alliance volunteers joined forces with the Flathead National Forest to protect the Middle Fork of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River. Their mission? Releasing Knapweed Root Weevils along the river corridor to help tackle one of the biggest threats to our native landscapes—invasive knapweed. 💪🌱
Why It Matters
Invasive species like spotted knapweed crowd out native plants, threaten wildlife habitat, and chip away at the ecological health of this iconic river corridor. By introducing Knapweed Root Weevils—a natural biological control—our volunteers are helping restore balance, protect biodiversity, and preserve the natural beauty of the Middle Fork for people, wildlife, and future generations. 🏞️✨
A Team Effort
This project was possible thanks to the dedication of our volunteer crew and the leadership of the Flathead National Forest. Special thanks to Brenda and Dave, who boosted the Forest Service’s efforts to tackle knapweed in places too rugged for volunteers to hand-pull weeds. Together, we’re finding innovative ways—human hands and tiny weevil allies alike—to protect this special river system.
Did You Know?
This effort is part of a larger network of noxious weed removal programs Flathead Rivers Alliance coordinates with volunteers. Each June, we host our annual River Weed Pull Rodeo, where nearly 160 volunteers wrangle invasive plants along the river corridor in just one day. Whether it’s through events like the Rodeo or by supporting projects like the weevil release, our community is making a big difference.
📍 Wild & Scenic. Protected. And now, a little more weed-free.
