Celebrate 50 Years of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River at River Fest

On Friday, July 10, 2026, our community will come together to celebrate something truly extraordinary—the 50th Anniversary of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River designation.

Hosted by Flathead Rivers Alliance, American Rivers, and an incredible network of community partners, Flathead Wild & Scenic River Fest is a free, family-friendly celebration honoring one of America's most remarkable river systems and the people who have helped protect it for generations.

In 1976, the North, Middle, and South Forks of the Flathead River became part of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System, helping protect more than 219 miles of free-flowing rivers. These waters are more than beautiful landscapes, they provide clean drinking water, world-class fisheries, outstanding wildlife habitat, and countless opportunities for recreation, education, and connection.

For five decades, this designation has safeguarded the character of these rivers while ensuring future generations can experience the same wild places that continue to inspire visitors from around the world.

A Celebration for the Entire Community

River Fest is designed for everyone, from lifelong river enthusiasts to families discovering the Flathead River for the very first time.

Join us from 5:00–9:00 p.m. at Marantette Park in Columbia Falls for an evening filled with:

  • Inspiring speakers celebrating 50 years of river conservation

  • Interactive educational exhibits hosted by local organizations

  • Activities for children and families

  • Local food trucks

  • Limited-edition anniversary beverages from Sacred Waters Brewing and Vibrant Roots

Whether you paddle, fish, float, hike, birdwatch, or simply enjoy spending time along the river, River Fest is an opportunity to celebrate the places that connect us all.

Celebrating More Than a River

This anniversary isn't simply about looking back.

The Flathead Wild & Scenic River continues to support thriving fisheries, healthy forests, outdoor recreation, local businesses, and communities throughout northwest Montana. As visitation continues to grow, so does the importance of education, stewardship, and collaborative conservation.

Flathead Rivers Alliance works year-round alongside volunteers, agencies, outfitters, tribes, nonprofit partners, businesses, and community members to protect river health while ensuring safe and enjoyable access for everyone.

River Fest celebrates the people behind that work—from volunteers pulling invasive weeds along the river corridor to River Ambassadors helping educate visitors, water quality volunteers collecting important data, and partners investing in the future of this nationally significant river system.
